Frotcast 545: ‘Air’ With Joey Devine

The Frotcast is back with another together-in-the-studio episode! It was just like old times this week, with Vince in LA to record live with Matt at Frot Studio South, and Roundball Rock host Joey Devine guesting, to talk about an actual movie.

This week we all saw Air, the heartwarming story of how Sonny Vaccaro got Michael Jordan to come to Nike starring Matt Damon as Vaccaro and Ben Affleck (who also directed) as Nike’s Phil Knight. Is Ben Affleck a good director? Do all 80s movies look the same now? Does Nike really need a puff piece? We answer all these questions and more.

If you don’t care about that, don’t worry, we have many other topics to discuss as well. We breakdown Johnny Depp’s deranged Q&A from Cannes, Mark Wahlberg’s incredible prayer video, and had Joey and Matt try to guess what movie analogy Elon Musk would reach for to try to explain his posting. It’s always a treat for us when one of the several Joes or Joeys we know stops by to talk about movies and life and junk. That’s why this bonus episode of the Frotcast is the sweetest treat of all. This week, Joey Avery and Joey Devine zoom into the Frotquarters to compete for who is the ultimate Frotcast Joey. In many ways, this is your typical episode of the podcast. Unfortunately these are not normal times and protesters have taken to the streets because the police are 🎵still racist after all these years. Therefore, the subject of racist police brutality will be discussed by a bunch of white dudes which is grossly unfair. I’d like to think that we are at the very least doing our duty by discussing our role as white men in a racist society, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Still, I think you’ll enjoy the episode as we talk about any number of subjects including online cancellations, shark pussy, and the national guard handing out old people pardons to Facebook dads who have been recently radicalized. It’s a somber but fun one.

For this month’s bonus live riff, the FilmDrunk Frotcast has selected Limitless, the original (lol, kinda?) “what if hunnert percent brain?” classic from 2011. It’s a film that plays like the screenwriter took a bunch of Adderall and wrote a film about SUPER Adderall that gives you superpowers. What if Bradley Cooper took Adderall? Would he court Lady Gaga even more meticulously? Turns out he mostly just gets a haircut and puts on a new suit, transforming himself from David Foster Wallace into Bradley Cooper, handsome movie star.

This week, we have Joey Devine of the NBA podcast Roundball Rock gracing the frotquarters as well as UPROXX’s own Zach Johnston. We discuss a wide array of topics, starting with Shane Dawson’s vehement denial that he had sex with his cat, to the recent This American Life in which Jon Ronson gets the skinny on the true origin story of Alex Jones, who told everyone in high school that he was the devil. Then we discuss the thing that literally everyone comes to the Frotcast to listen to… movies. Specifically, we talk the new Netflix film Triple Frontier starring Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac.
