229: Bad Turn Worse Directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins

It’s just Bret and I on this week’s podcast, so plenty of room for nihilism and self-loathing. We open discussing Bret catching up with the stuff that’s “all that” in pop-culture, like Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks and the Serial podcast. We discuss Serial and whether we think Adnan is guilty, and whether it’s all going to end with everyone horribly disappointed. At 25 minutes in, we bring on directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins of Bad Turn Worse, which opens today. They tell us about their favorite Texas crime movies, Jim Thompson, their screenwriter’s many pseudonyms, and then we talk famous filmmaking siblings. Turns out the Hawkinses got mad beef with the Duplass Brothers. The interview lasts until 53 minutes, at which point we talk about genre films, Kim Kardashian’s butt, and our favorite Christopher Nolan and Farrelly Brothers movies. Boom

228: Listen Up Philip With OJ Patterson

This week on the Frotcast, San Francisco comedian OJ Patterson joins Vince, Brendan, and Matt Lieb in the Frotquarters to talk about Listen Up Philip, the Jason Schwartzman celebration of navel gazing. We talk about Monique’s treatise on “Team Little Dick,” the Lena Dunham “molestation” drama, and rank our favorite Christopher Nolan movies, in honor of Interstellar. Enjoy!

227: Coherence, The Three Stages Of Cat Call Thinkpieces

This week on the Frotcast, we open discussing the Giants’ World Series win and the respective ways in which we as San Franciscans chose to riot. We discuss some film news, like Seth Rogen being cast as Steve Wozniak in the Steve Jobs biopic, and what an Aaron Sorkin Steve Jobs movie is going to look like. Then we get into the infamous Cat Call Video and the thinkpieces it has spawned, dissecting the three stages of Cat Call thinkpieces. We all saw Coherence, which we discuss (with spoilers) from about 59 to 70 minutes. Ben joins us via Skype, Matt Lieb tells us about his Linkin Park interview, and we finish up talking some Homeland.
Frot on and enjoy!

226: Zellweger Thinkpieces, Faith-Based Movies, the Time Matt Interviewed Linkin Park

The whole gang minus Ben is in the Frotquarters this week, and we open talking about Renée Zellweger thinkpieces. That leads us into her new faith-based movie project, Same Kind Of Different As Me, in which a Texas couple seems to have manifested their own magical negro. We bring on Laremy from Film.com who saw Birdman and Fury, we argue about our favorite films of the year so far and whether Michael Keaton is going to win the Oscar. Matt Lieb talks about the time he tried to interview the Linkin Park DJ about his new film, and then he sings us a rap about what he’s been doing with his life since he became a Chobani yogurt pimp.
Listen! Enjoy! Tell your friends!

222: The Frotcast Crew Reunites For Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

The full Frotcast crew, Vince, Ben, Bret, Brendan, and Matt, are all together in the Frotquarters for the first time in years to discuss Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure before a House of Prime Rib dinner. The Frotcast’s Excellent Meat Reward, call it. We open talking about Bill Simmons’ suspension from ESPN and the confusing nature of the NFL and ESPN’s supposed independence. MANDY IS A FOOL.This leads us to a discussion of Kevin Smith’s new movie Tusk, which was of course based on a podcast, leading us to wonder what a Frotcast-inspired movie would consist of. Our money is on Gary From Fremont: The Movie. RIDE WITH ME.After that I read Matt Lieb’s funniest post to date, leading to much hilarity. MANDY IS A FOOL.
Then we talk about the anti-vaxxer crowd, and Bret having to stand in line at the pediatrician behind someone getting a Personal Beliefs Exemption for his son, Jaden. This leads us to a reader-sent roll of a kindergarten in Eastern Kentucky (I will post this list on FilmDrunk). FOR MY PLEAZURE.
We get into Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and the great mall culture explosion of the 1980s, and we finish off with your emails and relationship questions.
MANDY IS A FOOL.

218: The Sopranos Ending, Joe Sinclitico Pitches Movies

Comedian Joe Sinclitico and old favorite Ben Kaplan join Bret and Vince this week. We open discussing reporters pestering Sopranos creator David Simon about the Sopranos finale and DOES TONY DIE! We wonder, what is the impulse that makes people ask questions about an ending that they’ve already seen? Is it the same impulse that makes them try to explain what’s in the suitcase in Pulp Fiction? As always, Bret has a lot of thoughts, some involving Thanatos. That seemed a little heavy for the first five minutes of a comedy podcast, so around 10 MINUTES IN, I introduce Bret to the song Creed’s Scott Stapp wrote for the Florida Marlins, “Marlins Will Soar.” I nearly broke Bret with that one. Naturally we try to mash that with the Smash Mouth isolated vocal track. We talk about the Henry Rollins/Robin Williams suicide editorial, then get into David Lynch’s ice bucket challenge, and the ALS ice bucket challenge in general. About 30 MINUTES IN, I attempt to explain The Identical to Bret, with limited success. We add Joe Sinclitico at 33 minutes, who has a lot of questions about yarmulkas and a bone to pick about us comparing the Chinese automatic sperm extractor to his idea for an ejac box. Ben comes on to talk about the one-year anniversary of losing his left testicle to cancer, and at ONE HOUR TWENTY, Joe King pitches some movies.
LISTEN. ENJOY. TELL FRIENDS. REPEAT.

214: Blue Ruin With Macon Blair

Comedians Matt Lieb and OJ Patterson join this week with Brendan returning as we welcome Macon Blair to talk about his starring role in Blue Ruin. We open the show welcoming Brendan back to the Frotquarters for the first time as a married-ass dude. He tells about finally getting to score and we talk about which jams got the people on the dance floor at his wedding, and whether he kept his “Return of the Mack” streak alive, leading to an impromptu sing-along sesh, as often happens on the Frotcast. After that we talk about Stephen A. Smith’s criteria for when it’s okay to hit a woman, and Whoopi Goldberg’s subsequent elaboration on it.
About 30 minutes in, we bring on Macon Blair, who tells us about his critically-acclaimed star turn in Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin. He tells how he created such a realistic puking effect (spoiler alert, by actually puking) and how he handled the pressure of acting in a film he new his friend had bet his entire life savings on. After that, we talk about Blue Ruin and read your emails. Frot on! Tell your friends! Write us reviews! frotcast@gmail.com, 415 275 0030

213: Under The Skin, Chinese Sperm Extractor Fiction

Comedian Matt Lieb and regular Bret join Vince Mancini of FilmDrunk in the Frotquarters this week, to discuss the Scarlett Johansson-naked classic Under The Skin and read futuristic fiction about Chinese automatic sperm extractors. With Luc Besson’s ‘Lucy’ opening this week, starring Scarlett Johansson, we decided to catch up on ScarJo’s last star turn, Under the Skin, from Sexy Beast director Jonathan Glazer. Bret liked it more than the rest of us, but for the most part, we thought the handful of cool images wasn’t enough to make up for a… movie… where… people… do… things… real… slow. We spend the first 20 minutes discussing Under The Skin, then movie into Brett Ratner talk, with Matt revealing that Red Dragon is one of his favorite movies, so much so that he can quote it at length. At 32 minutes, I begin to read a story I wrote for Ivan Hernandez’s show, Gimme Fiction, which I believe will soon air on the Boing Boing network with mine and all the other comedians’ stories from the same night, the theme for which was “Futurism.” My story is called “Love In The Time Of Extraction,” or “Last Extraction Hero.” After that, we talk about Israel for some reason, then discuss Facebook, weddings, and read your email questions on the subject of, naturally, anal sex. Enjoy.

212: Snowpiercer, Comcast, Richard Linklater, and Movies That Made Us Cry

This week we welcome Massachusetts’s own Steve Post, comic and San Francisco resident, to discuss Snowpiercer, our nightmarish calls and experiences with Comcast and the state of customer service in general, as well as Richard Linklater and movies that made us cry. We also talk about going into Trader Joe’s still wearing your bike helmet, Gilbert Gottfried’s incredible Bob Saget roast (flashback!), and our bad student films and why they always involve suicide. Enjoy!
Snowpiercer starts at 51 minutes and ends at 1:07 if you’re trying to religiously avoid spoilers.

211: They Came Together, with Justin Halpern

This week we’ve got Matt Lieb and Bret coming at you live (I think. Not sure what “live” actually means) from the Frotquarters in San Francisco. We talk about Bret’s ghost and how Matt lives in a paradox of being an atheist who’s scared of ghosts.

Later, we’re joined by Justin Halpern (Shit My Dad Says, Surviving Jack, future awesome things) and we discuss David Wain’s romantic comedy spoof “We Came Together” starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. I’d like to preemptively apologize for Halpern’s shitty internet connect, as we do end up disconnecting with him about five thousand times throughout the podcast. We go on to talk about the ludicrous amount of money that some of our podcasting peers have been making and we then spend the remainder of the podcast just begging (into our brand new dildo-microphones) for our listeners to spread the good word of the Frotcast to all of their friends and family so that Matt Lieb can finally quit his job as a handyman and just watch quicksand porn full time.

Speaking of which, PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE FROTCAST! I DONT NORMALLY TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS AND I WONT STOP UNTIL YOU TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
